Cartographic Cabinet
16"x16"x8"
Lasercut wood, lasercut plexiglass, etched copper brooches, spray paint, hand-raised and enameled copper bowl, etchings, and electroformed copper necklaces
Cartographic Cabinet is an exploration into the relationship between cabinets of curiosities, cartography, jewelry, and printmaking. In an age where almost all the guesswork of navigation is eliminated, it is important to re-animate the landscape and consider humans’ connection to it over the course of our evolution. The piece allows viewers and wearers to place themselves within a space of their own creation, moving the topographic brooches into an orientation of their choice, matching them up with the prints below, or wearing them as an intimate study of site. The  necklaces reference the history of jewelry as a signifier of place and memory. The piece in its totality is a contemplation of the ways we see, interpret, and alter condensed and subjective versions of the world around us.
